Cooper Rejects Intolerant Rhetoric
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper (TN-05) today spoke out against remarks made by several Tennessee state legislators regarding refugees.
According to The Tennessean, a Republican lawmaker said Tennessee should activate the National Guard to remove refugees already in the state. Another GOP lawmaker said officials should “use any means necessary” to stop refugees from entering Tennessee if they come from countries with ties to terrorism.
“Panicky remarks from our state legislature do not make America safer. The Tennessee National Guard should not be used to 'round up' recent immigrants,” Rep. Cooper said. “Such loose talk is not only ineffective but embarrassing. The FBI and local law enforcement have done an excellent job of policing any threats.”
