Cooper Reacts to House Contempt and Subpoena Resolution
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper (TN-05) released the following statement in response to the House’s passage of H.Res. 430, the Civil Contempt and Subpoena Enforcement Resolution.
“The Constitution gives Congress equal, if not superior, authority to the Executive Branch. Therefore, it is vitally important to our 240-year-old system of government that the Executive Branch comply with legitimate requests for information. That means complying with validly issued subpoenas,” Rep. Cooper said. “I regret that this Administration has chosen to stonewall Congress more than any administration in memory, so now Congress must do its duty and get the information that it is entitled to under the law.”
The resolution that passed the House yesterday will recognize that the House Judiciary Committee, as well as other House committees in the future, can force compliance with Congressional subpoenas or face repercussions in the courts.
